Why are so many people scared of surgery?

My thought is, if you die, you won't know it.

kind of the best way to go

yea but its just the fact of knowing that there is a possibility of death..i think thats why people are scared of it.

I had my gall bladder removed and I wasnt scared until right before I went inside the operating room. I was in so much pain when i woke up....But in the end i thought of it as a blessing to wake up after....

Doctors don't always know what they're doing, and they might kill you. I'm 45 and have been lucky enough to have never needed an operation (not counting infected fingernail operations). If I ever do need one, I'd want to be awake if possible. This way if the doctor messes something up hopefully I'd know and be able to yell at him to stop.

I am scared because I went into cardiac arrest after having a C-section back in '93. I was on life support for almost three weeks....

It's only natural to be scared of some one cutting on you with a knife, and being put to sleep, anesthesia can be upsetting to some people also.

Because the surgery might not be successful and what if they did the wrong procedure on you or operated on the wrong thing? It has been known to happen.

I never thought of death that way...
I've decided I NEVER want to [be]:
Hanged
shot
choked
drown
fall off a building/cliff
be eaten alive

I want to go peacefully in my sleep
