Company K of the Wyoming National Guard was a horse calvary unit until 1942 when they became partially mechanized. Both horses and trucks went overseas to the Asian theater (against Japan). At the end of WWII, the surviving horses were sold at auction where the unit re-embarked to come back to the US. The unit was fully mechanized after that.

I don't know if this was the last horse cavalry unit in the US, but its story is typical. The horses were useful in the jungle, but outdated by the end of the war.

There is a US Horse Calvary Association somewhere because my father was a member. I believe most of the old timers who actually rode horses are mostly gone or in their 80s. My father would be in his 80s now and he was one of the youngest in Company K, being the son of the First Sergeant (he never had a civilian life growing up).
