Lupus? I thought it was purposeful scarring of his skin from a ritual in an African tribe he was a part of as a young man. It's across his forehead too. They take hot sticks of metal and burn the skin.

I've heard his facial scars were the result of a form of tuberculosis he suffered when he was in his early 20s. He has resisted getting plastic surgery to fix them because he said they make him look distinctive.
