Yeah, all the time. You need to talk to them - it's just like babies, they don't understand what you're saying, but it's good for them if you talk to them.
I like talking to my dog the most, she just does this cute head cocking thing, like she's trying so hard to understand exactly what I'm saying. Then, if I say a word she knows (outside, walk, biscuit, bath), she'll start wagging her tail and then jump around and bark. My cats usually ignore me when I talk to them. The ferrets, well, they just look at me like I'm a nut (but what do they know, besides THEY are the nuts!). The chinchillas usually ignore me, too, unless I'm holding them as I'm talking. If I'm holding Jasper, he'll usually stop squirming (he's not crazy about being held) when I start talking and stare at me, then he'll lean forward and nose at my mouth, then pull back and stare some more and sometimes tilt his head a little.

Only this morning I asked my dog her opinion on whether or not I should buy some more Kleenex or not. She wagged her tail and looked at me as if I must be stupid if I expected her to answer that. She knows when I'm being rhetorical.

They understand better than most people. I talk to my Chloe Rose all day. She gets called: Darling, sweetheart, Baby Kitty.
My Dobie, has been moping all day. Seems depressed about something. Do you have any clues? Do your dogs ever do that?

Yes-daily-I talk to my dog Ginger-she stays in the house so she is like my kid..Sometimes thats the only one to talk to at times...
