Andy's portion: a
Bob's portion: b
Chris' portion: c

a + b + c = 1000

After one year:
Andy's portion: (a-100)
Bob's portion: 2b
Chris' portion: 2c

a - 100 + 2b + 2c = 1500
a + 2b + 2c = 1600
a + b + c = 1000
-------------------------
b + c = 600

a = 1000 - (b + c) = 400

Andy's original portion was $400

Bob and Chris had $250 and $350, Andy had $400.
Bob and Chris doubled their money to make a total of (250 + 350) x2 = 1200, and Andy lost $100, making 300 + 1200 = $1500.

400

Bob and Chris made 600 profit combined since their 600 profit minus 100 loss by andy equaled 1500. Now if they doubled their money they had to start with a combined total of 600 also. That leaves Andy with 400 as 1200 + 400 - 100 loss = 1500.

A + B + C = 1000
2B + 2C + A - 100 = 1500

2(B + C) + A - 100 = 1500
2(B + C) = 1600 - A
B + C = 800 - 0.5 A

A + (800 - 0.5 A) = 1000
0.5 A = 200
A = $400

The amounts for the other two aren't necessary, so this is what would make most sense to me.

x=Bob
y=Chris
z=Andy
x+y+z=1000
2x+2y+z-100=1500
x+y=600
z=400 was Andy's portion
Bob and Chris have to add to 600 but there isn't enough information to know exactly what they had.
