I am in 8th grade GT too. My teacher says that the topic itself does not have to be completely original, but it is the way you go about doing it that counts.

Make a model of a periscope! I suppose you know what a periscope looks like. Just use cardboard and two small mirrors. Get the cardboard in the proper shape and make sure the mirrors are inclined 45 degrees to each bend in the periscope.
Easy to make and it's fun too!
