Where does all of the animosity come from?

I think it is people who pay too much attention to sports rivalries and the press solidifying the animosity by creating rivalries so box office receipts will increase. Then there is the natural urge for humans to compete and with competition there commes at times animosity especially if the participants or the fans or both get out of hand. By actually hating someone because they root for another is barbaric. Kinda reminds me of the Romans who hated the Christians because they rooted for someone else and threw them to the lions and horrible tortures. Now that's hatred and animosity. No matter how you slice it animosity and hatred by fans is taking something that does not need to be taken as seriously as the emphasis we placed upon sorts which is supposed to be for the love of the game.

Some people are really into the game to the extent of hating other baseball fans because of the team they root for. This is especially true for rivalries and big-market teams. You could be really into the game without hating and trashtalking, but it's just "part of the game" to some. I'm a Yankee fan living in New York and I do not know many Red Sox fans (although I've been seeing more Red Sox shirts than usual these days). But, I don't generalize all the Red Sox fans. I don't say that they're all mean, because I know that the majority of them are probably friendly. Not every person is alike, and this is true for baseball- not every baseball fan is alike. Some are really mean and take the game of baseball to the world (i.e. who they'll be nice to, who they'll be mean to...). Some are very friendly and even if you're a Yankee fan and they're a Red Sox fan, they'll be friendly. It really depends what kind of person this baseball fan is, not so much the team they root for or where they come from.
BTW- Good question and I like your icon/avatar.

Some people just take it way too seriously and seem to forget that it is just a game! I don't hate anybody for anything...especially for the baseball team that they like! That is just silly to me! You don't hate me because I root for the St. Louis Cardinals...do ya? ;o)

Because they are incredibly stupid. It's the same thing as hating "all" anything. It's supposed to be fun. Now, ragging on each other is all right (with civilized restraints) and of course there is the passion of the moment, but it is not loyalty to hate fans of another team. It is plain ignorant stupidity.
