You can buy mothballs, but they really stink, in my opinion. Literally.
A better choice, I think, would be CEDAR BLOCKS. They are sold specifically for this purpose. Moths hate cedar. Some chests and wardrobes are made from cedar because of this.

Lavender & Rosemary sachets are the perfect solution. Not a well-known moth deterrent but a completely effective one that's been passed down in my family through several generations.
Here is a site that details the wonders of Lavender... including it's usefulness as a moth deterrent:
http://stason.org/TULARC/health/herbs/reference/Lavender.html
The Lavender sachets are ridiculously simple to put together. I buy bulk Lavender bud, and grow my own fresh Rosemary in my garden. I purchase the small organza bags (with the drawstring) at the craft store and just fill them halfway with a mixture of 1 part Rosemary to 3 parts Lavender. (It's every bit as effective to use just the Lavender... if you so choose)
Not only are they economical in comparison to cedar, the scent is a welcome alternative to moth balls in your closets and sweater drawers!
Here's a great site where you can purchase the bulk Lavender bud.

Good Luck!

You can use mothballs or cedar, but if the area is not enclosed, nothing you try will work. You won't have as many if the area stinks to high heaven from the aforementioned, but you could still have a moth in there. You can use zipper bags in your closet with a cedar bar inside.
