Some in India think that having one language(Hindi) across the country will help communicating. Ironically, EU has taken cue from here and has employed 100 or may be 1000s of translators to preserve its language diversity while at the same time not forcing one language over the other.

Since India is a large and linguistically diverse country, India does not have a single official language. As permitted by the Constitution of India, each state has its own official language
in addition to the official language used by the union Government.
The official language of the union government at present are Hindi and English.

The National Language of India is "HINDI".
However for political purposes India still uses a 2 language system, namely HINDI and ENGLISH.
So even though the National language is HINDI, the official languages of India are ENGLISH and HINDI.

HINDI IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF INDIA. THAT'S BECAUSE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE IN INDIA SPEAK HINDI.
