How long I have waited for this answer, like a spider in a web with poor access to insects.

Babe Ruth hit 715 home runs.
In 1969 he was awarded # 715 because he had hit a walk-off home run in 1918 or 1919 when the rules allowed only the winning run to count. The rules committee awarded a total of 26 (I THINK) home runs to players, including Ruth.

Alas, it became apparent that Willie Mays and Hank Aaron were perhaps going to challenge the record, so the rules committee took the home runs back, fearing that on or the other player may end with 714. They never gave it back.

But the Babe had that extra home run for about a year or so.

Babe got 714, one of his greatest was on October. 1, 1932. It was Game Three of the '32 World Series. At Wrigley Field Babe pointed to center field... strike. He pointed again, HOME RUN!! The trick was the ball flew to center field. The mystery is, was he pointing at Charlie Root (pitcher) or the center field wall claiming he would get it. Anyway Babe finished with these stats:

Average: .342
Hits: 2873
Doubles: 506
Triples:136
Home Runs: 714*
Runs Batted In: 2211
At Bats: 8399
Runs:2174
Stolen Bases: 123
Games: 2503

Sinatra is on the right track. Early in Ruth's career if you hit a home run to win a game (walk off) you were only credited with the base needed to win the game. For example if a runner was on third, and the game was tied your home run was considered a single as the game was "over" when the runner from third crossed the plate.

I'm not sure if any homeruns actually ever did Babe Ruth, I think that's what his wife was for. I could be wrong, though.

Regular season:
hit 714
yielded 10 as pitcher

Postseason:
hit 15
yielded 1 (to Brooklyn's Hi Myers, 1916 Game 2; only run allowed in 14 IP that game)

People like to think it was 714, but sources claim he's owed more than what we credit him for.
