Which of the fall/winter holidays are most important to you? Why?

2007-10-27 13:02:15 · 16 answers · asked by Anonymous in Society & Culture Holidays Thanksgiving

I agree with how disgustingly commercialized some holiday have become. Even veteran's day is commercialized, ie Veteran's Day sales - how many vets are homeless?! Walmart put up their Christmas stuff last month. I don't really mind the idea of giving gifts, I just mind that everyone is expecting one - that's just wrong. I won't be buying a darn thing till after Thanksgiving. The retail industry has recognized that people are like sheep - mindless. If they put the items out, people will buy them even if the holiday is 3 months way!

We'll be having the traditional stuff for Thanksgiving: Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, yeast rolls, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, chocolate dessert, etc.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Although I appreciate the symbolism of Christmas, I don't like how this holiday has become so commercialized. Although I do buy gifts for my grandchildren and children, I don't approve of how commercialized this most Holy Day has become.

I prefer Thanksgiving because it reminds us to be thankful of everything in our lives that we take for granted while living our day to day lives. My husband lost his good health 7 years ago, and we are thankful that he is still with us. My son lost 10 years of his life to drugs, and he has been clean and sober for almost a year now. We have two healthy grandchildren, we have a roof over our heads, food on the table, and each other. We have a loving Father who provides our needs, comforts us when we are desperate, guides the way when we don't know which way to go, and loves us when we feel unlovable.

We all have so much to be thankful for, and I like having one day that is not so commercialized that we can actually be together as a family, without the pressure of gift giving (and pre-holiday shopping stress to get those gifts for giving!) and express our sincere appreciation for all the ways God has been good throughout the year.

The traditional turkey dinner, with all the fixings, stuffing, cranberries, potatoes, gravy, veggies, rolls, the whole 9 yards. My favorite holiday though is Christmas. I just love giving, and doing things to make it special for the less fortunate. Doing the Angel Tree is awesome, you give gifts to children who's parents are in Prison, who wouldn't otherwise have a Christmas.

>>"What'll you be having for Thanksgiving dinner?"<<
The usual stuff - turkey, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and wine!

>>"Which of the fall/winter holidays are most important to you? Why?"<<
Besides Thanksgiving, Hanukkah.
Why?
Because it is similar to Thanksgiving in that it is about religious freedom and a celebration of overcoming difficult times.

I agree with your viewpoint on commercialization...however, this has been going on for decades.
I first noticed it when I was in high school, back in the early 1970's.

Very sad that the holidays have become a reason to buy, buy, BUY!

One thing we always have for Thanksgiving is mashed rutabegas. It sounds crazy but it is my favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving Day. Buy a rutabega and prepare it the same way you would prepare mashed potatoes. Peel it, cut it into chunks, boil until fork tender, drain, put in a bowl with milk, and a ton of butter and mash it. Sooooooooo Good! The finished product is bright orange and guests always think it's strange, until the first bite!

November 11th, Veteran's Day. It's about the only one that hasn't been materialized in the winter. Criminy they are already having adds for Christmas buys in retail stores and we haven't even hit Halloween.

Christmas, and not because of the presents. It's the day Jesus was born, and he's very important to me. But I do like the fact that I get to spend time with my family on Christmas day because we usually don't all have the time during the year to do so.

We have turkey & all the trimmings for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Tradition from when I was a kid.

The most important is Christmas, as it is when we celebrate the birth of Jesus. And, we have fine family celebration.
