They re-opened Alcatraz and operated it as a maximum security prison?

I've always thought so! What other people aren't getting is that we know it would need extensive renovations, if not a complete overhaul (that goes without saying), but the location can't be beat! If anyone gets off "The Rock" chances are they won't get too far! I always thought it was shame to go and let it rot, so they could build some high-tech marvel somewhere else (at the cost of millions of our tax dollars), instead of continuing to use the best natural defense against escape that ever was!

The reason that Alcatraz was closed in the first place was because it was too expensive to operate. There are a lot of maximum security prisons in the US now and if there is a need for more they will be built.

Err no, the structure is not secure enough. The cement and steel reinforcers are corroding.
