There is not just one wildfire in California there are a lot of them, and they have different causes. The Santiago fire in Orange County is definitely arson. Some of the other fires are the result of downed power lines. One fire was caused by sparks from a welder and another was caused by a structure fire that spread to the brush. The cause of some of the fires is unkown at this time.

In Australia it is very dry in most of the country.
Bush fires are the norm. We have had a few disasters like
California with loss of life and property.

The governerment is supposed to do winter burn-offs to reduce gound level tinder .this reduces the severity and frequency of fires dramatically.
However at the tops of ridges houses are at extreme risk
as the fire gains force and speed if it starts in the valley and burns upwards due to the large updraft it creates.
A fireball occurs that engulfs the tops of trees
so that even if there is no tinder at ground level it jumps from tree top to tree top.burnoffs cannot protect against that.



Whether there are arsonists is one issue.
if arsonists start several fires at once it could be much worse
than a naturally started bushfire but I am not sure about that.
Even if arsonists start the fire the consequences could be much less if there has been winter controlled burnoffs.
In Australia we have been slow to do burn offs because
of lobbying by nature conservationists.Our good record
with bush fire prevention has got worse as a result of cancelled burnoffs often over several years.


We have had self confessed arsonists and often they are sometimes members of firefighting teams so they perversely get to see close up the results of their actions.
