I'm doing a stats project and I must determine whether the info. regarding boating fatalities in TN in 2006 as reported by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency is significantly different from the same information as reported by the US Coast Guard. So the question is, what is my dependent variable, and what are the independent variables.

Thanks in advance!

You ind. variable is something that you can control such as the years, 04, 05, 06 or it could be states such as WA, CA, OR. It is something that you choose based on your liking.

A dependent variable is something you cannot control such as fatalities in a year. You can't control who dies. It just happens.

Hope that helps a little.

The dependent variable is the number of boating fatalities.

The independent variables are whatever the Coast Guard and TWRA used in compiling the boating fatalities. Are they both including humans, various marine animals, fish, etc.?These are the things that make up the independent variables.

If the two agencies used different criteria for defining a boating fatality, then you will have a very hard time saying who is right.

If the raw data requires extrapolation or probability theory, then that could be another factor which could cause the two results to differ.

If both agencies were given the exact same same info, then the only way they could be different would be that they differed in what was a boating fatality and what was something else.

You could really choose either one for either variable. This is because you are not graphing the effect one has on the other. Rather you are graphing the differences between the two.
