And we are talking about in total numbers and per-capita. Why does mass starvation continue to go underreported in this modern age of fast food convenience? What implications does this have for humanity as the process of desertification increases while the population grows.

The "Original Affluent Society" by Marshall Sahlins responds to your questions about starvation in the primitive pre-historic period. Basically the Cherokee & the Autralian aboriginals, etc. could feed and take care of themselves until impeded upon by a materialistic and technological western culture.

As for how many are starving today...

Maybe it's because even though we have the intelligence and resources to provide birth control, there isn't enough consistent use of it. Whatever your religious or moral beliefs may be, there is no logic in the overpopulation that is the current state of the world.
Humanity has made many strides for comfort and safety (vaccines, better food production, better housing, etc.), but still there is no consistent providing of birth control.
As horrible as the stuff is that goes on in China and India with female babies being killed and families limited to one child, it's unrealistic to think that despite human strides in being able to produce mass quantities of food, that food will be able to get to all the burgeoning populations of people in the most remote and largest populated countries.
There's politics, financial, farming and other issues that block the delieverance of food.
And, frankly, there's just too many people in the world.
Natural selection with natural diseases that we have cured would have prevented this from happening.
But, we messed with that, so this is the consequence.
Overpopulation -- too many mouths to feed and no way to practically get them all fed and kept fed fast enough.

My opinion is an unpopular one, however, here goes...Birth Control....masses are starving because of the lack of irrigation and agriculture available to their society...yet they continue to procreate in mass record amounts...education about birth control, agriculture, and irrigation supply, these are my answers to the crisis at hand.
