The Sabbath is the day that God rested, and it runs from Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown.
That's what happens when you have all these fundamentalist pseudochristian churches that worship the Bible instead of God, in violation of the first commandment. The mainline Christian churches insist on an educated clergy that knows the difference between Sunday and the Sabbath.
Sunday, by itself, isn't normally considered the weekend. The weekend arrives at the end of the workweek - nominally, at 5 PM on Friday - and it ends on Monday morning when people go back to work.

Because most people work Monday through Friday so Saturday and Sunday are weekend days. I consider Friday night a weekend night because I don't have to work on Saturday.

Tradition. Work 5, off 2, or the "weekend".
But you are right, from a strictly legal standpoint Sunday is the first day of the week, and Saturday is the last.
One of the things I would ask new hires when I was in management was "Would you consider split days off?" The majority of them said no. The split days were, of course, Sunday of one week, work 5 and have off the following Saturday. Sometimes they would ask after working a while "Why haven't you offered me weekends off?" My answer, I offered, you said no.

perhaps if you are looking to be technical...but saturday and sunday are considered the weekends because the traditional work week is monday to friday so therefore monday would start off a new week for many.
My weekends are Monday and Tuesday.

in case you think approximately the weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday, this is 3 days out of a seven day week. and you opt for to escalate it? There are basically 4 days left. I evaluate Saturday and Sunday the weekend, because of fact that's the final 2 days finishing the week..Hense WEEKEND.

You are correct. That's why people need to think for themselves and stop letting society dictate to them. For me I make more own rules.
My weekend begins on Thursday. Sunday is the first day of the so-call week, and I only give society 3 days and I do what I want for 4 days. Sometimes I give them no days if they mess with me.

Far as I am concerned, Monday is the first day of the week. So I don't have a problem with Sunday being the week end.
