If you're in Australia, they're different than the ones in the USA.

The ones in the USA are actually ok, they do avoid the places with dogs once they learn who has them. No possum can outrun a dog, so they tend to change their route at night.

I've been outdoors and the local possum came within 6' of me without seeing me (their eyesight is bad) but their hearing is phenominal. The dogs themselves will scare them off.

Now if you have raccoons, THOSE won't be scared off by barking. A raccoon can take a dog on, if it threatens their babies, and the mom does take the babies around with them at night teaching them to forage, from July through October.

I'm not fond of raccoons because of the aggression issue they present for the local stray cats. But the possums, they only eat a little of the dry food I have out at the bowl, and they keep the mice down very well. I've not had any problems at all with them and they're all over our area. None of them want to hang around people, so the only way I usually see them is with the motion sensor light going on.

They do tend to not want to walk in the light--you can look at having a motion sensor light put onto the garage or side of the house to help out.

possums are scavengers, they eat garbage. they also love dog and cat food so if people around you leave those things out where the possum can get it easily, there is no way you'll be rid of them. Here, we either trap them or shoot them. Very difficult to "run off" the possum.

Well if you live in Australia they are a native animal so its not lik you can exterminate them. However you should ring WIRES or something liek that and tell them that you are worried that the dogs will harm them. They will come most likely at night time and take them to the bush. I strongly suggest not killing them as you could get in ALOT of trouble! lol

Trapping and shooting are the most effective means. Generally once they discover an area they're happy in, they're not moving out voluntarily. Don't use poison because your dogs may find it and get into it first.
