Joanne Murray

The others were correct that her name is Joanne, and that she does not have a middle name.

When she wrote the first Harry Potter, she was an out of work mom, living on state assistance, (similar to Welfare in the US). She did not marry Dr. Murray until more recently.

As to the use of K for a middle initial, they failed to add that her publisher, Bloombury, thought she might sell more books to young boys if they did not know the author was a woman. They suggested she use her initials instead. Furthermore they asked her to use two initials, since that was more common.

I heard her mention this in interview. Since she had only the one name, Joanne, she decided to use K in honor of her grandmother, Kathleen. Her grandmother's full name is Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling if you wonder.

So using "J K" is all the publisher's fault... How many of us have changed things we may not have actually wanted to change, just to get the publisher's approval?

Joanna Kathleen Rowling.

Actually, she does not have a middle name. When Bloomsbury insisted that she use two initials and her last name (thinking boys would not read a book written by a woman, she used her paternal grandmother's mane as a middle name, but it is not legally part of her name.

J = Joanne "Jo"
K = Kathleen. Jo doesn't actually have a given middle name, but when her first Harry Potter novel was published she chose 'Kathleen' which is her paternal grandmother's name.

Her legal name now is 'Joanne Murray', but she has always been called "Jo"

Joanne Kathleen, the K taken from her Grandmother's name as she actually doesn't have a middle name at all.

Her first name is Joanne. She doesn't actually have a middle name so the K doesn't stand for anything - it's just a pen name
