Currently no. However, according to a political theory, in ten years China would be the next most powerful nation in the world in terms of military, population, technology, and perhaps economy, beating the United States.

Russia might be able as well but it will take some time. After the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia is not like the giant they used to be. As for India, it will probably take a few decades because of their low gross domestic product per capita.

I doubt Iran and North Korea would be strong enough to take on the US. They might have nuclear weapons, but their military is not as powerful as the US army. The only reason the US is afraid of them is because North Korea's neighbors, Japan and South Korea, and Iran's neighbour, Israel, are very close friends to the United States.

China, North Korea and Iran in an unholy alliance. The Viet Cong did quite well in the end and the Americans realised it was a war that could not be won but until Nixon had no idea how to get out of it. Sadly because US is not all bad by any means I think that it is now on the decline. It will not be noticed for a few years years yet maybe as many as twenty before the average Yank is aware of it but the signs are there just as they were for the British Empire after WWl

In terms of numbers China might be a challenge. Countries with nuclear weapons might stand a chance if they can deliver them in the U.S. Other wise no country on earth by itself has a chance in a real battle with the United States. One Navy battle group would sink most of the navies of the world. Numbers alone mean nothing. The U.S. has the most awesome military power ever seen in history. It really wouldn't take all that much to remove China's ability to fight. We may be hard pressed to completely annihilate their military but we wouldn't need to. All that would be necessary would be to bomb that giant dam they've got and wipe out their food crop. Fighting us would soon be a low priority and they wouldn't be able to produce the means to fight anyway. Simply bombing the dam would kill hundreds of millions of people and destroy their industrial base. Wiping out the food crops would seal their fate. The Chinese can't land on American shores because their navy isn't much more than a coast guard canoe club. They do have some nasty submarines but it would take a lot more than what they've got. The Russians on paper look pretty formidable but that's just on paper. In the field they would get their butts chewed right off. No single country holds a candle to us in a military capacity.

ONLY a country with a very strong Navy! And you had better believe that fact. Since we are the strongest in that dept. I doubt any country can really challenge our might. Without control of places like the Straits of Hormuz, the Suez Canal, or the Panama Canal, America would find it very difficult to project her power anywhere in the world. While the Air Force can transport men anywhere in the world, the heavy equipment required to win major wars can only be effectively moved by sea. It is the strength of the United States Navy that ensures the United States can project power as necessary.

Yes, China. China is the second most powerful military force in the world. If the conflict in Taiwan, for example could not be silenced and localized, they might as well fight with each other with its sophisticated and destructive weapon that will become an enermous menance to trigger another World War.

in some ways certainly, any country with nuclear capability really doesn't have anything to fear from the US.
Also due to the iraq war american forces are very streched so i'd guess at this moment in time, any modern army could pose a serious threat to the US. Bear in mind it has been over 60 years before america last faced a modern army, america would be at a disadvantage purely for underestimating its potential opponents.

I would say China is the only country, Russia would not stand a chance.

However, there would be no reason for them to challenge our military, so to me, that is not something that i worry about....

No, but if we start a war with Iran while being stretched at two fronts Afghanistan and Iraq and this causes Russia and China to join against us, it will create great problems for us.

No, but it doesn't matter because America can still be brought to its knees anyway, thanks to the stupidity and venality of its government and military/industrial complex.

America has amassed a huge military in order to fight a kind of war that none of its real enemies are stupid enough to want to fight. The wars of the future are not going to be the kind of wars that the US military has been trained to fight, namely large-scale land wars like the first Gulf War. That the US military cannot fight modern wars is beautifully demonstrated by the invasion of Iraq, in which a relatively small but highly-equipped US force easily beat the small and badly-equipped Iraqi army but then got immediately bogged down in a low-intensity conflict with Iraqi guerrillas, which has been going on ever since and which the Americans have always been incapable of dealing with.

You don't see Al-Qaeda hopefully massing tank battalions to go up against American armour. Instead, they hijack planes with plastic knives and fly them into tower blocks. America is going to have to give up the idea that it can rule the world with military might, because military might doesn't count for much anymore.

I doubt that anyone would try to battle it out in the traditional way, but anyone strongly motivated can play guerilla games against a strong military power with pretty disastrous consequences.

Military might is fine if you are going to be attacking, but defence at home is rather more imporrtant to the civil population.
