I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for, since the only names classified as "American" would generally be recently created monstrosities, such as "Nevaeh/Neveah -- Heaven (mis)spelled backwards." LOL

If you simply want names that are currently very popular in the states, for whatever reason, you might simply try browsing these exact names, posted each year by the SSA: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/OACT/babynames/

Take your pick from ...

Old-fashioned revivals or simply timeless classics:
Emily, Emma, Isabella, Ava, Abigail, Olivia, Hannah, Sophia (pretty much the entire top ten LOL), Elizabeth, Sarah, Ella, Anna, Lily, Katherine, Evelyn, Audrey, Madeline, Amelia, Mary, Claire or Caroline, for example.

Newly trendy crossovers (classically masculine or unisex names now popular for girls):
Madison, Ashley (not exactly "newly trendy," but definitely a common American crossover), Taylor, Addison, Avery, Mackenzie, Riley, Aubrey or Jordan.

Generally trendy options (random place or word names, recently popularized misspellings, meaningless, often rhyming, elaborations, etc.):
Kayla, Destiny, Kaylee, Makayla, Trinity, Brooklyn, Autumn, Jayla, etc.

If you simply meant to ask which name from the American Girl series is "the best," I've always quite liked Felicity, Molly, Elizabeth, Ivy and Nellie. ;)

Our generation is going more with origianal names these days instead of old fashion or american.

When I have a daughter Her name will be Millia. It's a Polish name. I love it!
