I started a family tradtion a few years ago. We get our tree's the day after Thanksgiving. For two good reasons. First, because everyone in my family is off tha day and second because all of the trees hit the lots about that time. My thought was the longer you wait to get your tree, the more dead it will look. If you get it early, you can take it home, cut off the stump end and put it in water. Anyone else agree!?

We stopped doing live trees a few years ago, but I can't stand the fake plastic ones either, so I have a wrought iron tree made out of horseshoes that looks great with our western-theme Texas cabin. We tie bandannas and red & green shotgun shells on it along with chili pepper lights and other western decorations.

I think we will probably plant a live tree outside this year up by the front gate to our property. I saw some solar-powered twinkle lights online, so if we did that, we could actually light it up without using electricity or trying to run an extension cord all the way from the house.

So, as to when, it will be sometime after Thanksgiving, I suppose.

Christmas eve. By then all of the trees are like 75% off, and you can get a bargain. Also, everybody is at home to decorate the tree then. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving at home, and all the family comes in On Christmas Eve.

We get ours in mid december, the day after thanksgiveing, i usually go out with my mom to help her pick out some gifts for me, and my brothers, I get up extra early and everything for that. One year, we had no time to get a tree, and we sadly got it on christmas eve. But it was cheap, but it was one of our best trees. We usually try to find the tall and fat trees. I live in a big house. That is great on having traditions, we started one 2 years ago, we go to a place and cut our own down.

We always wait til the start of December to get ours...partly because otherwise Christmas would last all year (not necessarily a bad thing!) and partly because the earlier you get it, the deader it is by Christmas day (pine needles everywhere! and a droopy tree). If you want to make sure you have a really good tree, try going to a Christmas tree farm where they cut them down themselves...then you can still get a fresh one :) Happy Christmas in advance :)

we dont get a real tree. not allowed in our apartment building. we have a nice artificial one and we out it up around the US thanksgiving time (I'm in Canada...thanksgivings done and past) I like to put it up early so I can enjoy it, but I do agree with you. the good trees go fast. and they get more expensive the closer it gets to Christmas becuase they know thats when most people get them. anyways...your family tradition sounds nice. I hope you guys have fun and have a great thanksgiving too.

We usually go with artificial. We have family members that
are allergic to the real stuff so we don't even bother with
getting the real stuff. And we usually put it up the day after
Thanksgiving or the first day of December. Depending on
when everyone can help with putting it together and decorating
it.

Well, we have a fake tree (because real trees make our cats insane) but we do put it up the day after Thanksgiving.

When you go to pick out a tree, ask what type will last longer. Then you can calculate if it will make it through the holidays. I haven't gotten one for many, many years, but it seems to me I was told the softer woods like scotch pine, don't last as long
P.S. If you go to www.flylady.com you can download a holiday journal that has spots to write in all your holiday traditions old and new. Favorite recipes as well.
