Money, and cards to get more, passport and insurance. Medicines, glasses and prescription for them.
Clothes for one week, you will not be able to carry all the clean clothes you need, so you will need to wash them, so better take less and wash a bit more often.
Sheet sleeping-bag, can save some money in many hostels, towel (take a small one).
Minimum in toiletries. If you run out of something you can buy it there.

Try to pack so little that you can lift your pack over your head, to put it in an overhead storage.
If it is too heavy for that, it is too heavy all around, as you will be lugging it around more than you expect and you will often sleep on the top floor of a building without lifts, more often than you like on the top of a hill too.
