When I go green I really lose weight, so why is it that cows do fatten up instead? I really do not understand how a cow could possibly be so big and bulky when they only feet on pasture. Some of you will surely think I am not for real, but I am not joking: I am asking because I really do not know the answer. Does anybody want to help?

Well the first reason is they eat a lot compared to their size, they eat far more than just to satisfy their hunger. The second reason is that they are ruminants; they have particular nitrogen-fixing bacteria and protozoa in their rumen which breakdown cellulose and give them amino acids and nutrients. So they get few multiple times more energy from plants than we ever do.

And they become fat. Woohoo for the cows!!!

Because YOU are not an herbivore. No matter how you may try, you're never going to physiologically be able to take good advantage of all the energy that grass can provide. Cows are designed by nature to scrape as much energy from the grass as possible by using large grinding teeth, four stomachs, regurgitation of partially digested grass (cud) and bacteria designed to break down cell walls, cows are designed well for the life they live. As an omnivore you will tend to do much less well on a diet dominated by vegetables.

Because the cow isn't active and grass contains a lot of carbs and sugars, which get turned into fat.

about 50 years ago i asked a teacher this question, his reply was " cows do nothing but eat & sleep"

grass don't have LOTS of anything that is why they spend so much time eating, but I still go with Jacob A

also, I believe farmers feed supplements to fatten 'em up.

(why do red cows give white milk, when they only eat green grass?)

If you ate apples all day but never moved, you'd be fat too.

Cows do not do cardio.

Anna Marie - The milk is in their udders, not their stomachs, unless you are referring to a calf, but it doesn't drink milk forever.
