I am writing a paper for a class on leadership, ethics and values. The question is are leaders born or can anyone be a leader. Does a persons personality, traits, qualities determine what kind of leader they will be? I mean, can someone who is shy, can they be a leader?

I don't think that anyone can be a leader, but I do believe that there are a lot of personality factors that develop in early childhood which can be nursed for good leadership qualities. If shyness could be overcome (I do believe it is possible), then that person has potential to become a leader. Being a leader requires you to interact with other people. Shy people have a hard time doing this especially with people they do not know.

I don't think its whether you are born a leader or not. Its about the environment you grow up in and how you adapt as a child to situations that life presents to you - as its those things that can make you shy when you're younger.
Even though someone who is shy and becomes a leader by masking shyness, they can never really shake shyness away and are less likely to be a strong leader.
Leadership requires a certain level of arrogance/ego dominance - they are the people who are "born to lead".

A person can be born a leader, but people can become leaders as well. The thing is, its not what your born into, its what you make yourself. People's personality does help. If a shy person wanted to become a leader, they could probably be able to easily make themselves one. Verbalize their opinions, etc. Hope you get a good grade.

You can born to be a leader. You can also train to be a leader also. There are many leadership theories out there. You may need to do your own research about this topic.

1.) Leadership is the process of influencing people to direct their efforts toward particular goals. Visionary leaders must know how to lead, plan, control, and manage effectively.

2.) There are four types of leadership behavior: Authoritarian, paternalistic, participative, and laissez-faire. Authoritarian leaders are forceful and power hungry leaders. They tend to focus on heavily work centered or end justify the mean. They are less likely to interact with other people because they do not believe in human interactions. Paternalistic leaders are father figure leaders. They tend to focus on heavily work; however, they still have some consideration for human interaction. They like to look after and take care their employees problems. Participative leaders are fair and easygoing leaders. They encourage employees to play an active role in operating. They motivate employees to make their own decision and take care of their own business. Laissez-Faire leaders are non-authoritarian leaders. They try least possible guideline to employees. They trust in employees’ abilities to get the job done effectively. In addition, there are other types of leadership such as Servant-leadership, transfroamtional leadership, transactional leasdership etc. Servant leadership emphasizes the leader's role as steward of the organizational development. Servant leadership encourages leaders to serve others while staying focused on achieving results in line with the organization's values and integrity. Transactional leadership focuses on getting the job done effectively within its status quo. On the other hand, Tranformational Leadership focuses on making change in organization.

3.) There are 5 basic style of leadership. The 1,1 managerial style is described as the do-nothing manager. In other words, the manager lets employees do everything. The 9,1 managerial style is describe as the production pusher. In other words, the managers are more concern about productivities and benefits than employees’ need and feelings. The 1,9 managerial style is called country-club management because of high emphasis on employees’ feeling and needs. The 5,5 managerial style is a typical managers who compromises and balance concern for production and people. The 9,9 managerial style is an ideal style. It focuses on employees’ high-level needs, involves subordinates in decision making, and assumes the employees’ goals and the organization’s goals are harmony.

4.) The leadership who born to be a leader called Trait Theory :)
Good luck and take care :)

There is an old saying:

"Aspects are within us, and he who seems most kingly, is the king"

Maybe you can develop this theme in your paper.
