North America's lone marsupial is the opossum (pronounced as "possum"). In other areas, there are other marsupials that are also called "possums" and they are spelled without the "O" at the beginning.

In south america there is a short-tailed possum, and a mouse possum, among others; and the south pacific is home to numerous species such as the sugar glider (similar to our flying squirrel in appearance, though it is a possum).

Some texts denote the new world species as "true possums" and lump the rest into another taxonomic group (sorry, can't remember the name of it), but they are all called possums in one spelling or another.

Good question!
