To know a thing and to know it's name is to eliminate ALL of its power over you. Once you are able to recognize it for what it is you are able to confront it directly and deal with it.

What we call the dark side is nothing more or less than the lot of our subliminal fears, insecurities, suppressed feelings and inadequacies the existence of which we either deny or neglect to deal with upon occurrence.
Accepting the dark side of our selves is only the first step to a long journey full of struggle and pain. We need to understand the darkness within, come to terms and embrace it.
It’s like being in the dark for a long period of time; it takes a time for the eyes to adjust and gradually suffer the light.
The dark side can be a valuable ally once embraced with love and light but it will put-up a hell of a fight before submitting to our willpower.

No. By accepting that each of us has a dark side makes one enlightened and a fully integrated person, as disturbing as it sounds. You might enjoy reading Jung and about archetypes. That's the Ego telling you it has power over you. You have free will and can choose what to do with your dark side.

Let's take for example alcoholism. If you never recognize it (accept) that this drug has power over you, you will remain helpless. But simple recognition is not enough. Plenty of people can recognize that their obsessive compulsive rituals are a pain in the *ss, but changing it is a different matter. The same goes for phobias, and for reckless behaviors like promiscuity.

if you want to live in the light then you have to accept the dark....
only you can give the dark power over you. if you fight the dark in you then when will you have peace?
you will always be at war with yourself. that being said ...
if you learn to accept your dark side and learn it's limitations you then give the light the power to over come the dark.....
peace and blessings crone

Accepting your dark side is only half the battle, you need to learn also how to take control off it.You have a choice to either control it or let it control you.And in some cases your dark side in your control can be helpful to you depending on what your dark side is.

No, but that is the hardest step in balance... to recognize that there is a dark part. Most people will admit they do "bad" things from time to time, but they don't really admit to themselves that there is a darker part to all of us. Instead they avoid it or try to cover it up in themselves, which is always a potentially dangerous thing to do. It's like caging a wild animal and then thinking that from time to time you can go and pet it. Now, many people will point out this darker part in others, but rarely do I see people actually trying to balance it within themselves.

I think it does to some degree, if you meant just accepting that it's there and that I have to deal with it. But it's a fine line between accepting that it's there and giving yourself totally over where it would have complete control.

No, absolutely not. It's good to acknowledge and know about your dark side so you can be a little better prepared when it rears it's ugly head. However, the power of your dark side will sometimes prevail. It's a war until death.

I think once you accept the dark part of yourself and transform (transmute) it into positive energy--then, yes, it no longer has power over you.
