We live in SE Wisconsin (Zone 5) and have grown ornamental Tobacco plants for several years. My mother grew up on a farm in central WI and they used to grow tobacco as a cash crop. (There are still a few old tobacco drying barns in the area).

Since our wonderful State Senate just voted to up the tax by a dollar a pack (#*&!*#!!!), I may have to grow my own next season.

For a long time (before developers bought up their land) there were a lot of tobacco farmers growing prime-quality cigar wrapping leaves in mid Connecticut. That is New England and reasonably north.

I've been growing Burley and Arabian tobacco in zone4 N Dakota for years. I think because the tobacco industry started and flourished in the mid-Atlantic states, people assume it's tender. I've had temps in the 20s and they are still green and flowering. RScott
