Austria wanted more influance on the Balkan, so they use the Archduke Ferdinand as an excuse to invade. with this, they declear war on Serbia. Russia is bound by a treaty to Serbia and sent in troops. Germany is allied to Austria and sent troops to protect their allies from the Russian army, and the French, who are still pissed off at the Franco-Prussia War, were more then willing to help their allies the Russian aginst the German, eager to get Alsace and Lorraine Back. Britian is bound to a treaty by the French and the Russian and join, and the japanese is bounded by a treaty to the British and use this as a excuse to hold land in China, like the other world powers. America join in latter on the allied side. The Ottomans were allied to the German and entered the War. Italy want more land so they entered the winning side, ie the Allieds. The central power lost and the great depression strated.

First cause was the assasination of the Arch Duke of Austria. The Croations and Serbs would not hand over the killer.

Since Germany had an alliance with Austria it followed with the declaration of war by Austria against Croatia. Same for Britian and France who had an alliance with Croatia and had to honour that when war was declared.

Germany did try to get a diplomatic solution and tried to talk England and France and Austria out of going to war, but they all said no. So you got world war 1.

The four main reasons for World War I were:
Militarism - each side was building up its military
The British had the strongest fleet of navy vessels.
Alliances - each side signed partnerships with other countries
The Triple Alliance - Germany, Austria-Hungary,
Italy
The Triple Entente - Britain, France, Russia, and
later in 1917, the US
Imperialism - Colonies were big at this time. Britain had
25% of earth's surface. Germany jealous,
wanted to gain more power because it was
boxed in.
Nationalism - Each country side felt it was better than the
other.

Easy way to remember is MAIN.

Because virtually every nation in Europe was part of a large alliance if one of them was attacked, half of the continent would come to their aid. And once they did, the other half would have to defend their allies. So in very quick order the whole continent was at war because one second rate nation invaded a third rate neighbor.
