Pantherfan: You know ... I've heard that works.... They are not fire ants, thankfully, just regular run of the mill black ants. Thanks for your help!!

If it's far enough away from your house, you don't really need to worry about it. Ants do cleanup of dead things before mold and bacteria get a hold of them. They also help loosen the soil. Their only bad quality in the garden is that they give protection to scale insects and aphids. If you can live with that, just make sure they don't get in your house.

Why are small ants a problem, I have several beds around my garden, and leave them alone. They were here first. The ones I don't tolerate are red ants since they sting, or the larger brown ants which I battle with each year that raise aphids on my okra plants. Those types are pests.

We had problems with the black ants this summer and what I did was pour half water and half vinegar down the nest....did the trick for us...You can also use this combination inside your house to wipe on counters and such ....Good Luck

I am not sure if it works for regular ants or not, but if they are fire ants what you can do is take grits and sprinkle it where they are and it will kill them. Ive done it on several occasions and the ants either died or never came back, its a cheap and easy remedy.

Everybody's gotta live Somewhere!!.... leave them alone.... if they're not looking to set up housekeeping in YOUR house, why wreck theirs?... they're good bugs, actually, and not hurting your garden at this time of year at all.... like was said, they do like aphids and that's their only drawback out there.... the water must have seeped into a nursery and they just hurried to save the babies..... what's 'ewww'?.. wouldn't you try to save your babies in a flood?.... please, live and let live in this case?.....

they might come into your house.
They don't hurt anything.
they are amazing critters.
