Captain Bunkum says we don't, but I don't think he is speaking for the majority of people who do think the human species is "the greatest thing" ever to evolve.

The simple answer is probably arrogance. Or maybe religion. Or simply a basic misunderstanding of what "the greatest thing" might be.

Surely "the greatest thing" would know it has to stop overpopulating it's home planet if it wants to continue to survive as a species. That is one very simple test any basically intelligent organism should be able to pass. But, humans are failing miserably at stabilizing or reducing the population to a sustainable level. The opposite is happening instead.

We don't.

Scientists recognise that every living thing is equally "evolved" because we all evolved from the same original starting point (as evidenced by the commonality of DNA and/or RNA across all living things). Thus we have been evolving for just as long as a whale, an earthworm or an amoeba.

What distinguishes us is our ability to use our brains in a different manner but the distinction is actually quite small. Other animals use language, tools, exhibit a basic awareness of self etc etc and it is only recently that some humans have come to depend on advanced technology, money etc to survive. From an evolutionary standpoint it's possible to argue that reliance on such technology is actually a sigh of weakness rather than strength.

Arrogance, narcissism, wishful thinking, and a general misunderstanding of the process of evolution.

We may be naive and there may be other intelligent life out there. But so far there is no conclusive proof.
