Whichever variety you choose will determine any future tank mates for your fish. If you already have a goldfish, then the type of goldfish you already own will determine which fish you should choose!

I love both Oranda and Lionheads! These fish are not good tank mates, so you'll need to decide which you prefer.

Generally, goldfish are divided into 3 "compatibility" groups

Great Swimmers: Single tail (comets, common, shubunkin)
Good Swimmers: Double tail
Fair to Poor Swimmers: No dorsal fin. No tail (rare). Extremes in body shape with

Oranda fall into the Good Swimmer group and Lionheads are in the Fair to Poor group. These would not be great tankmates.

Oranda: These fish have a split veiled tail, ornamental head growith (wen) and a dorsal fin. They are "good" swimmers. The good thing about this variety is that there are many other fish that are compatible tank mates. Black moor, Ryunkin, veil tails, eggs and brocades are but a few varieties that would work well with an Oranda.

Lionheads: The most notable distinction between this variety and the Oranda is that lionheads do not have a dorsal (back) fin. The lack of a dorsal fin makes this fish a "fair" to "poor" swimmer. A lionhead should not be put in with fish that are better swimmers because it would be out competed for food. The good new is that there are some lovely and unusual goldfish that would be good tank mates for a lionhead. Ranchu, celestials, bubble-eyes (caution here - experienced keepers only), pearl scales* and meteors (very rare tailless fish) would be acceptable tank mates. * A note about Pearlscales. "Pearlies" do have a dorsal fin, however, due their golf ball shape, the aren't the best of swimmers. In my opnion, this fish does better with dorsal-less fish.

Which fish you choose is going to come down to personal preference and/or what goldfish and tank size you currently own. Both Oranda and lionheads will do well in about 10-12 gallons of water per fish. A 10 gallon tank doesn't hold 10 gallons of water due to substrate/gravel, decorations and other items in the tank, so bear this in mind.

As with all goldfish, you will need a good filter, and a fitted lid for your tank. Ensure you do partial water changes weekly and test your water for ammonia and nitrites weekly.

FEEDING: Both Oranda and Lionhead have a wen (headgrowth). You will want to feed a varied diet and include occasional wax worms. 3-5 per week per fish is good. Waxworms are high in fat and this is a good thing for the head growth. You will find waxworms at PETCO, Petsmart or anywhere supplying reptile food. If you're a bit squeamish about the worms, Hikari has a great pelleted food for Lionheads!

He is not an Oranda is he has no Dorsal fin. He is probably a LionHead or a Ranchu.

I have both orandas and lionheads. Orandas have a dorsal fin. And lionheads don't have dorsal fin. mine, they get along very well. Even though the orandas are a lot bigger. They are gentle beasts, to the smaller lionheads.

Quality Orandas are easier to find in petshops than Lionheads. They are a little hardier because their characteristics have been fixed with time. They are also easier to find in almost all colours: orange, black, chocolate, calicos, tricolors, etc.
