Is there a Federal Driving organisation in the United States that determines laws for driving, etc? Or like a Federal DMV? I prefer answers with sources.

Each state sets its own driving laws in their vehicle code. But they have to comply with the Federal laws w/ respect to roads, registrations, vehicles, etc...

Although all states have their own DMV offices, the federal government has one too, in the Department of State (for consular officers and their staffs). It's the smallest DMV licensing agency in the US, and they handle licensing, vehicle registration and other similar activities. See the sources listed below.

Actually, it's kinda interesting - met with a consular officer several months ago on a detail.

Calif Deputy - 19 years on the job.

The first poster is correct in that all driving laws are determined by the state. HOWEVER, once in a while the imperial federal government does want to impose certain traffic/driving laws. Therefore, the imperial federal government tells the state that your state law shall be as we dictate or else we will take away all of your federal highway funding.

Laws regarding driving are mandated by the states, but are based upon the US Department of Transportation guidelines. Back when the speed limits were 55 on the highway as an example, states could opt out, and choose to make them 65, but would lose funding. Thus, technically, states have rights, but if they want funding, they follow DOT guidelines.

They're state run...not federally. You'd have to figure out which state you were going to in order to look up the information you're requiring.

Each state mandates it's own driving regulations, and has it's own Motor Vehicle regulatory body.
