Hi, I started coughing on Wednesday (haven't been ill), and today I've been feeling worse, slight temperture and cough seems to have settled in my chest.
As it's the weekend I can't see the GP till Monday, what could I do to help relieve my chest and what could be causing it?

I have had no sore throat and my headache is mild to moderate.
I do have a slight temperature.

To everyone who is ill: I hope you get better soon!

I've got something like it too, it must be this time of the year.

Coughing is the biggest sign to anyone around me that anything is wrong with me. I am not sure either if I have just a cold because I don't have much if any of a fever but I have aches and pains sometimes like the flu.

It started in the throat that is the most bothersome and consistant problem, for the last few days. Just the other day I thought I was getting a bit better but than NO, it comes back like it just lingers and now after a day of normal activity I am exhausted.

I don't have the energy to do what I normally do, I easily lose my breath. But I am still active just tired.

It's almost just enough now to go to the doctor but I know the usual routine with most of them--if there is no fever no medicine right? Why can't they cure the common cold by now?

I have had asthma too when I was younger, so that must mean something too, like reations to colds could be worse than other people have.

When I feel worse at night I use this magic pillow which you heat up in the micorwave and put it on your throat or chest (I do both) and that really helps as the night is when it is worse.

I've just been using tylenol at night to relieve some of the aches and headache.

Who is the cancer guy, what a nut, it isn't something to joke about. Obviously that person has never had a loved one die from cancer or that comment would not have been made duh!

If you have a fever consistantly make sure you drink lots of liquids so you don't get dehidrated.

Good luck, hang in there until you get to your GP. And good luck to all others with an illness who posted.

I had the same thing. I went to the doctor and what I had was (i can't remember the name) but it is when the cough or infection settles in the cartilage between your rib bones and your sternum in your chest. My doctor told me to take aleve two times day (breakfast and dinner -- make sure you eat when you take it). And apply heat to your chest whenever possible (like a heating pad). That should help until you can get to the doctor to see if that is really what you have.

Both my brothers are doctors and they said that this has become really common this time of year.

Good Luck! E-mail me if you have any questions :)

Could be virus, bacteria or other.
Until you get to the GP or clinic Monday, take an expectorant and decongestant at night and use a vaporizer or warm mist humidifier. Add an antihistamine to the mix if you are sneezing or have itchy eyes or throat.
The decongestant will help dry up drainage to your chest and the expectorant helps break it up so you can cough it out. Gross but necessary

its probably mucus that has built up in your lungs. Phnemonia is when you have hella mucas in your lungs and its really hard to breath. But people get chesty coughs all the time during fall and winter. Eat some hot soup and drink Thera Flu (lemon is best) or orange juice. Dont run around just rest. Go to bed early and dont wake up too late. Dont watch too much tv either. Well hope this helps

No, it is nothing do with stress.. when ever you have coughing and blood in it,, it is suppose to come from your brocheole ( lung). i suggest you have to go to hospital and consult a doctor. Most likely if you are living in some developing country is Tuberculosis of lung. there are other causes also for the blood in cough...we call it haemoptisis. i urge you to and consult doctor. it is not necessary not to have all these disease even when you are non smoker.

Sometimes a cold can begin with a cough, instead of the usual runny nose etc. It's only a few days. Try olbas oil and paracetamols (watch the dosage-bearing in mind other cold 'remedies' contain paracetamol too, to help reduce your temperature.

A cough that goes on for weeks and weeks can be serious. Bronchitis or, rarely, TB. Get to docs and try not to breathe over the other patients too much in the waiting room.

could just be a normal chesty cough or a chest infection, but im no doctor, try having a hot bath with lots of steam to clear your chest, dont know if you have any but benylins chesty cough medicine is the best in my opinion, if not have some hot lemon water and some honey mixed in if u have it. if u have none in the house just get a good nights sleep and head out tomorrow to get some medicine until monday.

Sounds like it might be flu. I had this last year, I couldn't stop coughing, and I had quite a high temperature. The best thing to do is just stay home, keep warm and rest. Also drink lots of cool fluids. Your doctor might prescribe you some antibiotics. :-)

To stop nighttime coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet at Bedtime, then cover with socks.

Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.

I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like acupressure. Just Happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids and senior citizens often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs so!

It was a surprising finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, and in addition, to have A soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

My wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant cough and felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, ( incredibly annoying!) every Few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough free for hours every night that she used it.

So, if you have Grandchildren, pass it on, if you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect.

Maybe it could be whooping cough? My mom had it...you cough a lot and it seems to never go away, but it does...after a long while. Btw, it really does not sound like cancer.
