My son asked me to see a Rated R movie today. I checked the movie out and I completely trust my son, so I said it was okay for him to go. However, I know that you need do like 17-18 to buy tickets to a rater R movie. So, how does this work? Do I need to buy the tickets for him and his friends or do I actually need to watch the movie with them?

Thanks in advance to all who can help.
By the way, I live in Massachusetts.

Parental discretion is required. Go see a movie with your son and his friend. Won't hurt you. ;). Sounds like he is all boy. That's a good thing. Plus look at it as some Father/Son time as well.

You must buy the tickets and watch it with him. If not, you can talk to a manager about it and tell him you don't want to see the movie but you are allowing your kid to.

"Note: No Children Under Age 6 Will Be Admitted To Any R-Rated Feature After 6:00 PM. Valid IDs will be required to attend Rated "R" movies. You must be at least 17 years of age or have your parent accompany you to view the movie. IDs will be checked at the theater."

You can go with them to the theater and tell the person selling the tickets that they have permission to watch the movie. That works most of the time. But a few particular theaters insist that you be present during the movie. It all depends on the policy of the theater you're going to.

The R rating refers to the MPAA ratings system. Check the website posted for full information, it should answer any questions you may have. Take note of this snippet, it directly answers your question: "Children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated motion pictures unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian." If you want to be technical, you can only bring along your children or wards, not others' children. In practice however, most movie theatres will allow children 17 and under to attend provided any adult of sound mind accompanies them.

Perinatal discretion is require, with that said, you could go with him and watch the movie too, an adult needs to be with him is what will happen, that's the way it is here in IL. I'd sit in a different area so my daughter and her friends can be by themselves. Oh and have him and any friends bring ID'S just in case.

You're suppose to go with him. PG-13 is parental guidance recommended, but R it's required. X is just simply not allowed.
Most theaters, in spite of posters saying they check ID, just look the other way, though.
