I have a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII. I have replaced the belts and there is still a very loud, annoying, squeaky noise coming from the Alternator Pulley. It stops when I spray it with WD40, but it keeps returning. What is wrong and what can I do?

sounds like the bearings are shot. Also, wd40 is not a lubricant, it is a water displacer and won't help your situation more than for a few minutes. Sounds like it's time to replace that alternator or have it rebuilt if it is worth saving.

Screeching as you describe is many times the outcome of a foul belt or mis aligned belt / incorrectly tensioned belt or wiped out bearings on some thing that the belt drives. which will be some thing from the tensioning pully, idle pulley, water pump... some thing the belt touches. If this dude can't fix the project, and get it good the first time, then it truly is time to get a clean mechanic. Now i'm sorry if this guy is your brother in regulation or inspite of... even though it sounds like he do not understand what he's doing...

All I can think of, is that the alternator itself may have bad bearings. Try replacing the alternator, this isn't usually *terribly* expensive. A good mechanic could probably do it in less than an hour...

Sounds like the bearing in the pulley are gone. This likely means alternator replacement unfortuneatly.

it sounds to me like the belt is loose,if it was a bearing the wd40 would make no difference because the bearings are sealed
