So, have they? And by newer cars, I mean 2004 and up.

I remember having a 1994 Ford Explorer and it just sucked so much. I invested more than $1500 in repairs in just 8 months. Ridiculous. I kept having so much trouble with it, I just went in and bought a 1996 Honda Accord. The Accord has been the best car I've ever driven and I love it!

So have American cars gotten any better? I sure as hell will never buy another Ford, unless it's a ford mustang, but other than that, I hate Fords.

What about Chevy's? I'm looking at the newer Chevy Impala looks very impressive.

Hope to get some answers.

Ford has gotten a WHOLE lot better with their quality and reliability. You can look at the Consumer Reports and the JD Powers & Assc. I know they used to suck but now it's a whole different story. With all the competition there is out there, they can't afford to make the same quality cars that they made 10+ years ago. On the other hand GM isn't doing to good. You should give Ford another chance. Just because that happended to you with one car doesn't mean that it's going to happen again. I suggest that you at least go and take a look at them at a dealership and them do some research. Make a wise decision not a dumb one.

I only drive GM cars. From my experience they seem to work well and last a long time. However, they do accumulate a lot of minor annoying problems over time that don't interfere with safe driving and usually aren't worth fixing. I have a 1996 Grand Am that I bought new and has 127,000 miles. I usually have one major problem per year that costs $300-$500 to fix (usually the alternator), but mechanically the car works well. My first car was a 1971 Impala (bought in 1982) that lasted until 1987, and it worked pretty well until the last year or two.
