Do you agree with this statement?:
A true sports fan sticks with their team through the ups and the downs; the losses and the wins. They root for them no matter what. Even when they are doing badly, terribly, horribly; even if they lose a game by 50 points, 20 runs, 10 goals- they will stick with their team. They respect other teams and other true fans even if they are their rivals because every team, every true fan has great aspects. Those who put people down because of the logo they wear on their hat, the colors they show on their shirt are NOT true sports fans.

I just made this today and I put it on my AIM profile. I know there may be some grammatical errors. Sorry about that. I was just wondering if you agree with that, and I know that it's been asked before, but:

What is a true baseball/sports fan to you?

Thanks for all of the input.

A lot of you pointed out things that I didn't put into perspective. Thanks. Like:

Yankee Fan for Life: Crying, watching, knowing...
> That's excellent

King of Kings and others: You could be a sports fan and not have a favorite team.
>True

Kris and others: Trash talking is part of being a sports fan.
>I agree that it could be part of it in a heated rivalry, but it's not always. The last part was kind of bad, but I just wanted to put those words (logo, colors) in there, and I made a point about respecting other teams and their fans.

Gene: I agree

Those who make fun of people b/c of the team they like are retards who either take things too seriously or have no lives. I been a Yankeefan for 29 years & a Giants fan for 26 years & an Islander fan for 23 years. The Islanders have done horrible since their great years in the 80's & i never abandoned them. The fake fans in my opinion are the ones who like a team when they are winning titles but as soon as they start losing or don't make it to the playoffs all of a sudden they will switch to another team & then claim that they where fans of that team for years even though they know it's not true.

Yeah, basically what you said divides up real fans and bandwagon fans.

You also gave the definiton of the red sox fans (before '04). Before '04, probably 90% or Red Sox fans never saw them win a series. They didn't hope each season they would win, but just hoped they would win once during their entire lifetime. When we were 18 games behind the Yankees one year, we still went to the games cheering. When we were in the ALCS down 0-3 against the Yankees, the chances of us were winning were slim. But with Fenway still packed, we continued to root. We beat the odds and ended up having the greatest comeback EVER and winning the series, breaking the curse. It was amazing.

The thing about the logo and shirts thing I don't really agree with. Red Sox and Yankee fans have always been rivals, and that just makes it more fun. It is all in good fun, and baseball is a competition. In every competition, there are rivals. In every highschool, there is a rivalry town. You have to support your team no matter what.

I sure do. I live in Ohio & my teams are the Indians, Browns & the Cavs. As all of u already know, that creates a whole lot of flack. During the playoffs w/the Yankees, I recieved a lot of answers from other AL fans. They admitted they were Detroit fans..., Even after Boston beat us, I posted a congratulatry post to their team. It amazed me at the respones I received for showing good sportsmanship. There is no need for all the bashing, True sports fans stick with their team, win or loose. The key words here, being nice to others.

As a Red Sox fan I often jokingly suggest to call child protective services when I see a child in a Yankees hat. I support their right to be part of the Evil Empire!

As for changing teams! I can not totally agree with you. I grew up in Michigan 80's (Lions, Tigers, Pistons, and RedWings were home state teams) I chose to support the Spurs pre-Duncan, Red Sox when they signed Pedro, Patriots when they signed Parcells and New Jersey Devils (can't explain that one about the same early 90's period).

You can support other teams if you solid justification for doing so! IE the lions of the late80's and early 90's were without a doubt one of the worst run organizations in the NFL, if your a fan of those teams you need to NOT show support! I was in about 6th grade then and I was able to realize that all the in state teams were classic examples of how not to run an organization! The 2nd rule is you can't switch to a team that is currently extremely good (Pats, Colts, Yankees, and so on!) pay attention and become a fan of a team that is doing things the right way!

Hi,

I really like your statement and the spirit in which it is intended. I especially like the part about respecting other teams. In fact one of the best parts about other teams coming to play my team is the fact that I can see other players that I admire in person in action. I cannot imagine hating another team (as in all the players on it - all teams have very talented players it really is a privilege to see them in action)

That said - I have friends that do like other teams and I do tease them... it is something we do as friends and it is just in good fun, nothing malicius. I would never just pick on some random Yankee Fan that I pass on the street.

just my thoughts

I totally agree with you. I am a diehard Cincinnati Reds fan for 32 so I have seen the good and the bad and a true fan stays no matter what happens. I would never desert them!

Dear Abby:

Sure I do. But take 'true' off of there. It's a snob's term. A fan is a fan is a fan. You could use 'die-hard' or 'big' but 'true' and 'real' are terms people use to elevate themselves above others.

well i do like it, but i think that the generalization you made doesnt quite fit. Everything you said is perfectly fit for a *enter team name here* fan. but people can be general sports fans and not have a team they stick by

i like it though!
