I know that's not artistically sensitive, but they both die and life goes on for everyone else.

Technically, they won. They were together in the end, and the rift between their families was healed.

It's a mistake to look at the action of the play from a modern viewpoint. In a time where literally everyone believed in an afterlife, dying didn't mean losing.

R & J are sacrificed for the good of the society. The feud between their families is over. That is what a tragedy is--a sacrificial rite which cures an ill in society. R & J lose their lives as did many others in the story, but they are heroes forever.

They lost. It's a cautionary tale for families who hate one another and tend to pass on that hate down to the next generation even though they have no reason for it. They're the ones who pay.

The romantic's version: they won because in death their love will live on forever.

The synic's version: they lost and their families won because they did not get to fully embrace their love in life.

Neither. They did not win or lose...But their families were the losing party in the story.

i think the whole point of them dieing was they neither won nor lost.... or they won and lost.. its ur interpretation.
