I am an American, and had the chance to study in Spain a few years back. I am going to visit for a few weeks after xmas, London, Paris, Seville, and then Dublin. I was hoping to extend my trip, and work in a hostel in exchange for room and board, is this common. I have extensive travel experience, and currently work in a hostel. Thanks

Contact each of the hostels in the towns you want to travel, and remember also to contact the hostels in the smaller towns around them.
My brother's then girlfriend used to work in a hostel for a short time, and bed and board where part of the deal, no use for her as she lived near and wanted to go home when not working.

I have met many people working in the hostels when traveling, many of them also stayed in the hostel. But I have not often seen notices that asked for help. (Although I do remember seeing some on the 'work in this area' noticeboards.)
People working in hotels often also stay in the hostels near.
