Growing up Borje Salming was one of my biggest hockey heroes. That's right, I don't have it in for the all the Europeans, just the ones who can't live up to my standards which are play every game with all you've got so even if you lose when it's over you can say you did your best.
Anyway, Borje was a pioneer for European players to come over and play in the NHL. He was successful and he stayed a long time. The Toronto fans loved him. He inspired me to switch to playing defense, even Numba Fouwa didn't do that. So anyway as I digress again, here's an article with a particularly grewsome Salming picture in it to share. Now perhaps you can tell me who your biggest hockey influence was now that I've told you mine (NHL or otherwise). Cheers! Oh here's the link LOL http://www.thestar.com/Sports/NHL/article/271006

Zap: always liked Joe Mullen. And I still feel he was better than Modano. He never got number one ice time but always gave you 100% on every shift. I've seen night when Modeano looked more like he was out for a skate than playing hockey.

Jen: that's certainly interesting - glad you gave the game a chance : )

Hayley: Salming wasn't a goon. He was one of the best skaters I ever saw and was brilliant in both ends of the ice. His biggest knock was the fact he spent so many years playing for a Leaf team that was owned by Big Bad Harold Ballard so winning a cup or icing a great team was never a priority.

My biggest influence was the MLB strike.. lol I was irked and had to find another outlet to spend money on and go yell and cheer. So, my friend had to pick another friend up at Disney Ice in 1994 so I waited around in the stands and watched practice. I was hooked.

This is worth sharing my Hero was Johnny Bowers & really enjoyed hockey when it was only 6 teams. Now a days there's too much fighting & the salaries well takes away from the days of Old Ballard he must be rolling in his grave at the money they pay now.

Joe Mullen. He was an American hockey pioneer and began his journey to the Hall from the most unlikely place, playing roller hockey in the playgrounds of Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen area.

Growing up in NYC and discovering the sport through roller hockey, myself, Mullen was a true inspiration for me.

Wayne Gretzky.....Every kid wanted to be him back in the 80's....so, I guess I was just like every other kid. When your young you only want to cheer on the best, when you are older you want to also cheer for the best to come.
I think I read about Borje Salming in "Hockey's Most Wanted". He sounded like a goon that could shoot. I know he played in the 80's, but I don't remember him.

Ahh, i remember him getting cut in the face with the skate blade, i saw it on tv and on youtube, scary moment.

As you asked, My hockey hero is Mats Sundin, Is and always will be, i know almost as much as he does about himself lol, and before he retires i want to get his autograph. It will be hard watching the leafs without Sundin, it's not the same, but i gaurentee Kaberle will take the C, hopefully...

Bobby Orr was my childhood hero but I liked Salming too. (and I'm no Leafs fan, I just appreciated his combination of skill, toughness and work ethic)
