Egg. Birds evolved from dinosaurs
which laid eggs. Indeed, dinosaurs
evolved from primitive fish, which also
laid eggs. Eggs (a method of storing
food with the young as it matures)
have been around for millions of years
- the chicken as the bird we know it
today is pretty recent.
You could ask: Which came first,
the chicken or the chicken's egg
... and the answer is still probably
the egg. Mutations happen in one
cell, not a bunch of cells at once.
The mutation "spreads" by the mutated
cell multiplying. Consequently for
you to have a genetically uniform
chicken, it must have come from one
cell that was also genetically chicken.
That cell would be the egg.

Elana I agree with most of your reasoning... However, what actually came first as you put it is a 'mutation' which occurred in a single cell ( obviously a cell is an egg) However that single mutation in a "chicken-like ancestor" could have occurred in either the haploid 'egg' or the 'sperm' of the the pre-chicken parents ... but once the zygote was formed that mutation was stored inside the egg with the complete compliments of chromosomes.... so the egg of the new species comes before the completely developed chicken ;-)

I think the chicken.
In a scietific view:
All things evolved from single celled organisms. The cell evolved into a chicken.
In a religious view:
God made animals 1st before they reproduced so the chicken came 1st.

The egg. The chicken first theory doesn't hold up in evolution.

Why-oh-why does this question get asked every day?? Surely when you wrote this question, Yahoo Answers told you of many places to check for an answer from yesterday, or the day before, or last Monday, etc......
