I hate it, too. Sometimes they play a different song by the same artist as if that will somehow make up for it. The reason many radio stations don't play requests is because they probably don't have the song. Many of them have severely restricted playlists and the stations themselves are automated. These are largely the reasons I have stopped listening to the radio.

I never called up a radio station to request a song, but I did have this happen to me when I went to a nightclubbing a couple of times. I requested a song (can't remember what it was) and I waited all night for them to play it, and I never heard them.
Cars now have radios that play music on satellite. What they need to go along with them is a "smart request" intercom. It can be used for any satellite station except anything that doesn't play music. Simply say the title and artist of the song you want to hear, and they'll play your request after the song currently being played. But be sure to know your music - matching song and artist with genre; they won't play your song if you're on the wrong station.

Radio stations get tons of requests for songs....they usually have to make sure they haven't played it recently(especially if it's new and they grind it in the ground anyway)......chances are they will play it....though usually an hour or two later

It is probably due to the fact they get so many requests that they can't play all of them.
