He was born Ehrich Weiss, in Budapest, Hungary.
He changed his name while in his teens after his hero, Robert-Houdin, a 19th century magician from France, he took on the name Houdin(i). Everybody then called him Harry Houdini. By 1900, he became recognized as the World's Greatest Escape Artist. The biggest challenge posed, was the 600lb. iron trunk. Houdini was bound with chains, locked in the trunk and dropped into New York City's East River. He was able to escape before he almost drowned. After that, his fame rocketed. His escape tricks involved straight jackets, sealed coffins, prison cells. Performing all of these escapes in front of cheering crowds. His most AMAZING escape was the ChineseTorture Water Cell. He was chained upside down and submersed in the water of the glass cell that was locked. He was able to escape within 3-4 minutes. This became his signature stunt.

Harry Houdini (March 24, 1874 – October 31, 1926), whose real name was Ehrich Weisz (which was changed to Erich Weiss when he immigrated to America), was a Hungarian magician, escapologist (widely regarded as one of the greatest ever), stunt performer, as well as a skeptic and investigator of spiritualists, a film producer, actor, and an amateur aviator. Houdini was a sensation in Europe, where he became widely known as "The Handcuff King." He toured England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Russia. From 1907 and throughout the 1910s, Houdini performed with great success in the United States. He would free himself from jails, handcuffs, chains, ropes, and straitjackets, often while hanging from a rope in plain sight of street audiences.
