I just became a part of the credit union (offered through my college) because I am originally from another state and I can't get my deposits directly deposited for yet another number of weeks. My other bank isn't a credit union, but it also uses Visa debit cards. I just received the one from the credit union in the mail today and it stated that after I activate it, the possible other existing cards will be deactivated. Does this count my other debit card that isn't from this same banking system? The person that set me up with it didn't bring up there'd be a problem.. he didn't even ask me if I had another debit card. Neither of my banks are open right now so I can't even call and ask this question!

If the debit cards are from different banks even thought they are both visa you shouldnt have a problem. The warning on the card saying other existing cards would be deactivated is probably ment for other cards from that credit union. When someone loses a debit card and applies for a replacement, the other card would be deactivated naturally incase someone finds it and tries to use it. I am sure that is what the warning is for.

I'm sure that that was a form letter making a generic statement about replacement cards. It means that if you had a previous debit card on the same account from the same institution, and then you active this new card, the previous card would be inactive. Don't worry. I think you are fine. Why don't you go out and try to buy $5 gas on each card and see what happens.

That only means that any other card issued by the Credit Union for that specific account would be deactivated. That won't affect any debit cards you have with different financial institutions.

It shouldn't be a problem. The credit union's disclaimer about deactivating other cards is probably referring to other cards you might have in their system. Visa doesn't manage the entire debit card system, it's financial institution by financial institution. You should be able to use both cards without one affecting the other.

It shouldn't since a debit card is tied to a specific account. I think the reference to "other existing cards" means previously issued cards for the same account.
