I currently make $81k . I have 5 years in at my current company. The job/company is stable. The job is boring me to death though and I've kept my resume active on Monster.com. I've been offered a position where the responsibility would be greatly increased along with opening up carrer paths that are simply not available at my current company. I'm thinking of asking $100k from the new company and taking a counter offer as low as $94k. My question is, should I tell my current company about this? Does this give me leverage with my current company, or does it simply scare them in to looking to replace me if I decide not to go with the new offer? If my current company counter offered $90K I'd likely stay given the job security and the profit sharing plan I'd remain vested in. Should I tell my current company or keep silent about this and any other opportunites that come up?

I'd wait until I had an offer from the new company before I said a thing to my current company. Then I would tell them what was offered, and see what they countered with, if anything.

Secondly, you said that your current company is solid and stable. Is the new company the same way, or are they unproven? It would be foolish to walk away from $81K for a job that might go away in 6 months.

Once you start talking seriously with the new company you should inform the old one of what is going on, thereby giving them a chance to respond.

You need to wait, however, until you are very sure they are making an offer, lest you poison the well you drink from.

It depends on how your current company feels about you. If you feel they really like you, just tell them you were offered another job. . . don't reveal the salary offered and take it from there. Good luck!

I wouldn't say anything unless you have a definite offer (with salary) from the new company. Don't burn any bridges before you have to.
