Petaluma, Guerneville, Occidental...all are 'river towns' north of San Francisco. But go to Sausalito first, the first stop over the Golden Gate Bridge; it's touristy, but lots of restaurants and beautiful views of The Most Beautiful City In The World.

South of San Francisco, the coastal areas in and around Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur (lunch at 'Nepenthe' is a must---call about making a reservation--, and check out The Ventana across the road; and see if you can take a quick peek at The Esalen Institute . Take the coastal road (Highway 1) south, thru Pacifica, etc., and stop in Princeton-By-The-Sea and go to the Half Moon Bay Brew Pub (the famous 'Mavericks' surfing area is just over the hill), then check out Half Moon Bay on your way farther south. It is truly a GORGEOUS ride.

I am kind of partial to San Carlos as well but a close second would be Half Moon Bay.

San Jose. It's mostly quiet and laid back, yet there's a lot to do. They also have the only NHL team in the area (Sharks) so that's huge in my book!

Definitely Monterey. It's beautiful!
I like San Jose because there's always something to do.

Petaluma. I like it WAY more than San Francisco.

Bolinas, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay, and pretty much all the small towns along the Marin coast are also lovely.
