Step One - Learn to spell the Dewey Decimal System. (It was NOT named after a duck)

S6tep Two - the Dewey system has assigned specific areas of interest to specific numbers, from which sub-divisions are represented by further decimal divisions.

If you Google the system you can probably get a listing of the divisions. Each book is assigned a specific number so that books can be filed on shelves numerically. You look up the book in the card catalogue, get the number and it's very easy to find the book.

The Dewey Decimal System breaks down knowledge into 10 categories. The numbers are the subject area and the letters are what's called cutters, usually the author's last name.
