There are many factors that dicate how much a professional athlete makes. In some cases they do not have to be the best athlete.

If they are famous, infamous or popular then the team owner can expect more people to come to the game to see this person and the player can demand more pay and get it. The owner can also expect higher broadcast revenue as well, and of course team Jerseys with that cats name on it.

Sport dudes like Beckham may be overpaid due to these factors. Owners of teams can and do pay too much when they speculate on how much increase in team revenue will occur due to any given player being added to the roster. The hype may not match with reality, especially over the whole of a contract term which can be several years long.

Add to that the fact that earnings quoted may include endorsement cash that can be larger in total than the paycheck from the team.

I do not think he is worth the cash, and I expect the soccer team owner to lose when the hype dies down and it will.

He's a good athlete and a celebrity-type of athlete, like Venus Williams or Tiger Woods.

They are worth more beyond their athletic skills because they can attract a lot of people's attention, which is excellent for advertisers.

It's all about the money a popular athlete can bring to a team via ticket sales, TV rights, etc.

I guess, even though i've been wondering the same thing. I think it's something to do with his being from a country other than America. America pretty much lives for entertainment, so they decide who's cool and who isn't.

And he's pretty hot, I must admit.

He draws a crowd. A crowd means ticket sales. Therefore he makes them more money.

Additionally I am as assuming 50 - 90% of his income comes from endorsements.
