Back in May I had get get a new catalytic converter put on my car in order for it to pass the emissions test. I got a universal one put on and it was doing fine. Two days later my check engin light comes back on. And I got to get it checked out and they tell me that I need a cat converter and that I should have went with the GM one in the first place. I called my body shop toady and the guy tells me that the have and OE equivalent that they didnt' have back in May, and that it's $100 less than the GM one . I dont even know what and OE equivalent is! What is it? And should I go with the OE of GM? help plz

usually the after market ones wont cause no problems but ,o e ,means original equipment ,so you may have to go with an original one,the shop that installed it though should knock this amount off what you have to pay for the new one since they did put the after market one on,they are responsible for it,and the after market ones do come with a warranty on them,so you should be covered on this one,sometimes original is the best way to go,good luck with it.

OE is just short for original equipment. As you've seen, lots of people claim that their parts will do the job, but that isn't always the case. In my experience, GM parts especially emmissions, electrical, and electronic parts are far superior to aftermarket. Not only do they work better and longer than the others, but they are predictably better in the response to other GM equipment. You've already been burnt once. I would also suggest to you that you have another problem as convertors don't often go "bad". One of my old bosses used to say they get murdered. This usually meant there was something upstream sending either raw fuel or unmetered air down into it. Doesn't hurt to check again as this is expensive.

FYI there is an additional warrenty on the catalytic converter that last 8years/80,000 miles. GM will replace for free. mine went bad on my 02 impala a few months ago

cats are guaranteed by the auto maker for 10years...its a government regulation.....if you look at your owners manual it will tell you....its a EPA rule...you made a mistake not going to dealer for it...if your car destroyed 2 cats why do you think it wouldn't destroy this new one....something is very wrong with tune or fuel management system..
