The webcam was once attached to this computer and have worked just fine. I am running windows XP.

I recommend you go to the manufacturer's website and access it support area. There shouldn't be an issue with installing your web-cam, perhaps you are missing a file or one is corrupt now. It is easy for a file to become corrupt over time, so perhaps downloading the related software and drivers will resolve your issue. Just download it from the website to your desktop, (this way you have it handy if you need to remove and reinstall for any reason, which happens more frequently than some would think). One reason for a removal and re-installation is the very issue I am discussing, a corrupt file. Often, the first step in correcting a software/hardware related issue is the technical department will instruct a removal and re-installation to see if it resolves any corrupt files.
